Thomas J. Hanratty was born on September 27, 1967 in Elizabeth, Union
County, New Jersey. He graduated from Elizabeth High School. Prior to
joining the New Jersey State Police, he was employed by the Jewish
Y.M.W.C.A.
Trooper Hanratty enlisted with the New Jersey State Police on February
10, 1989 as a member of the 112th State Police Class and was assigned
to Troop "B" Somerville. His service with the Division was
characterized by loyalty, fearless performance of duty and faithful and
energetic devotion to the principles of the New Jersey State Police.
Trooper Hanratty died from injuries received in the line of duty.
At approximately 5:09 P.M. on April 2, 1992, Trooper Hanratty was
conducting a routine motor vehicle stop on Route 78 near Summit, Union
County, New Jersey. While walking back to his Troop car he was struck
by a passing Hyundai. He was thrown on to the hood of the car, which
continued approximately 400 feet before he fell into the shoulder of
the road. He suffered massive head trauma and was transported to the
University Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Trooper Hanratty served 3 years and 1 month with the New Jersey State
Police.
Trooper Hanratty was survived by his parents and two brothers. He was
24 years old.
